BRASWELL MILITARY SERVICE AND PENSION RECORDS
The following is an attempt to list a few of the many Americans who served their country during times of conflict, and whose surname is BRASWELL or a derivative.
COLONIAL WARS 1675-1763
BRACEWELL, WILLIAM (direct ancestor of the author) was found on the April 1, 1720, roster of Captain Robert Patterson's Militia (see pg. 12).

SOUTH CAROLINA
Unknown Indian Uprising/Skirmish
R.S. Clark: BRASWELL, SAMUEL- (direct ancestor) while in South Carolina fought in the Indian Wars and was awarded bounty land in the Cherokee Land Lottery of Georgia (1832). In 1852, he was accidently killed while fighting the Indians in Tennessee (see pg.s 4 and 16-17).

at the age of sixteen enlisted in the Confederate Army. He was taken prisoner and was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio (brother of Union soldiers Ellison Lacy & Thomas BRASWELL below).
BRASWELL, George,
probably served in the Confederate Army as he died in the prison camp at Columbus, Ohio (brother of Union soldiers Ellison Lacy & Thomas BRASWELL below).
BRASWELL, James Richard,
served in the Civil War, probably a rebel as he lived in South Carolina.
BRASWELL, Larkin L.,
took up arms in Georgia about 1862 and never returned home from the war, his brother stated that he was killed.
BRASWELL, Robert B.,
Private, enlisted in Wake County, North Carolina, on January 29, 1863. He was captured at Gunn Swamp May 22, 1863, and confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia, until paroled and exchanged at City Point, Virginia, on May 28, 1863. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company B, 3rd Battalion North Carolina Light Infantry (pg. 68, 1600-1981 ed.).

probably served in the Union Army as he died of the measles in a Little Rock, Arkansas, prison camp, June 6, 1864.

private, born in Anson County, North Carolina. Was a farmer by occupation prior to his enlistment in the Union Army at the age of 23. He enlisted March 22, 1862, and died May 29, 1862, at Wilmington of disease (pg. 68, 1600-1981 ed.).

WORLD WAR I 1917-1918
BRASWELL, Miner Nelson
enlisted in the Service April 5, 1918, from Great Lakes, Illinois, and was attached to the U.S. Naval Band. On December 13, 1919, he was discharged in New York City.
BRASWELL, Reuban A.
was inducted into the U.S. Military Service May 29, 1918, and received his training at Camp Gordon, Chamblee, Georgia. He was assigned to the 67th Replacement Unit and landed at LaHarve on August 7, 1918.
BRASWELL, Thomas Millard, Jr.,
entered the Service May 28, 1918, and was sent overseas June 13, 1919. He was attached to 131 M.F. Bn. June 13, 1919, he was discharged at Camp Grant, Illinois.
WORLD WAR II 1942-1945
BRASWELL, Byron Vance
served with the Seabees in the Aleusions and saw action.
BRASWELL, Fred Owen
served with the U.S. Army.
BRASWELL, *Glenn Leroy,
served under General George S. Patton in the Third Army.
BRASWELL, *Hildon Basil,
served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Promoted to Top Sergeant at the age of 26 (one of the youngest in Marine Corps history) March 3, 1942. He enlisted in New Orleans May 7, 1935. Hill was assigned to the Marine Corps Riffle Range in LaJolla, California. He was the youngest man in the history of the Marine Corps to win two first place medals in national rifle competition. Hill reenlisted in the Marines in 1940 and served in the Pacific.
BRASWELL, Joe Fern
served in the U.S. Armed Services in Italy.
BRASWELL, *Noel Upton,
was in the first wave of American troops to land at Normandy and was severely wounded.
BRASWELL, Orville E.
served in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Carlisle (the Carlisle was the first ship to be sunk by an atomic bomb, it was sunk at the Bikini Atoll).
BRASWELL, *William Claude,
served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1948.
KOREAN CONFLICT 1950-1953
BRASWELL, ELIZABETH (ARMSTRONG),
enlisted in the United States Air Force (WAF) on November 21, 1950, in Bradenton, Florida, and was attached to the 20th Fighter Bomber Wing. When the 20th was reassigned to England, Elizabeth was then attached to the 365th Night Recon Jet Squdn. In 1952 she was reassigned to recruiting in Virginia before being sent to England in 1953. At Denham AFB she served as Editor of Base Supply for the entire United Kingdom with the rank of Sergeant. She received her honorable discharge one month shy of four years on October 4, 1954.
BRASWELL, *Hildon Basil,
enlisted in the United States Army in 1945 and served in Korea. Hill retired from the Army with the rank of Captain on November 30, 1960.
BRASWELL, Roy French,
son of Dr. Roy Bennett BRASWELL, entered Officer's Training School at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he graduated as a Second Lieutenant in 1951 and served briefly in Korea.
BRASWELL, SAMUEL C.,
enlisted in the United States Air Force July 19, 1951, in California and was sent to England. His first base was at Bushey Park, Teddington, Middlesex. He finished his tour at Chicksands Priory (now the home of the 10th RSM) with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received his honorable discharge May 5, 1955.
