What's so important about an album?

It's much more than a collection of photographs placed in a book, it is the record of a family's journey through life; a photographic essay depicting the existence of a group of people we call family.

Family albums are among the more important and exciting aspects of what I do because it is here, through videotape, that I can help a family enhance its understanding and appreciation of its heritage.

Normally there is only one album in a family and when the children leave home they, as a general rule, start their own pictorial history book and that is fine. You might, however, want to consider getting together with as many relatives as possible, pool all of your pictures, mark them together with the names, dates and places on the back of each picture and then have them copied onto videotape. This way it is possible for each member to have a more comprehensive record of the family history.

If you wait, it may be too late. For every relative that dies a certain part of your family's history dies with that person. Recently I lost an uncle who had fought the Japanese off of the frozen Aleutian Islands. Few people know that enemy troops were actually on American Soil during WWII. His own daughters knew little of his war time experience.This could have been a tragic loss unless he left a record of some sort. We've all heard it said that a picture is worth a thousand words. If this is true, and I believe it is, then every family owes it to itself to preserve their history for future generations. Today, perhaps more than ever before, because history is being revised and re-written on a daily basis, I feel it is vitally important that every person knows from whence he came for that may be the only map to where he is going.

With that said, why send your pictures to me? The answer is really quite simple, I care! Family and friends are so important to me that I just assume they are to you as well. This part of what I do is, quite frankly, the least profitable and most time consuming mainly because I will not be rushed! I feel that this is too important to be simply digitized and crunched by the computer like any other commercial operation or commodity. I will give your photographs the same thought and careful attention I have given to my own.

It wasn't until my daughter and two cousins started working on the family genealogy that I realized the importance of what they were doing. Starting with little to go on, they were able to by bits and pieces from all over the country and carefully documented each fragment until they had woven a beautiful tapestry in which the "old folks" long gone were suddenly brought alive, if you will. Now, great, great, great grandchildren have a different perspective of their roots. The captivating power of video has helped re-kindle an interest in family and family ties. It took awhile and a lot of dedicated and patient effort on their part, but they did it and what a wonderful job they did.
